2019 Rookie of the Year Tracker (Week 8)
By Keith Van Wagner
Special to gzl-football.com

We are nearing the halfway point in the 2019 season and the Rookie of the Year Race is still very much wide open. No rookies have truly emerged as in years past, and some of the top picks in the draft have yet to emerge. The leading rookie so far is Ben Medina, the 3rd rounder who was the 5th HB taken in the draft. Atlanta running back Cubby Williams who was taken 6th overall is not too far behind and is within striking distance.

The rookie race is split evenly between offensive and defensive standouts. At this juncture, Chicago outside linebacker Vic Beasley is judged to be the most dynamic, based on his impact in most facets of the game. Defensive Linemen Malcom Brown and DQwann Miller each have 4 sacks and make the list.

Of the Top 5 picks taken in the draft, only Brick Baylor makes an appearance on the list. Top pick Devin Funchess gets consideration, but so far he has yet to emerge among the rookies. On the other end of the spectrum is 6th rounder Baron Cooper, the third to last TE taken and a product of the 6th round. Cooper is second among all rookie receivers with 400 yards and 3 TDs. Cooper had a monster day in week 4 with 9 catches, 122 yards and a TD. He has cooled a bit in recent weeks, but still makes the rankings.
